Buying a good fitting suit from a reputable brand is just the first step on your way to suit heaven. Now you have to wear it right.
About 1-1.5cm of your shirts sleeve should be visible at the end of the jacket cuff. Any more and the jacket is too small; any less and you're David Byrne in 'Stop Making Sense'.
Suit Jacket buttons have confounded manly brains for centuries but the rule is simple. The bottom one is always undone, unless you’re in a single button dinner style jacket, in which case the bottom one is also the top one and should therefore be buttoned up.
Trouser cuffs should finish just about the heel of the shoe – but this is one of those rules that your Tailor or Grandma already knows so let’s move on.
Brown shoes are fine with any colour suit, but only as long as your belt is the same colour leather. Mixing a black belt with brown shoes is like mixing the grape and the grain – and could lead to the same result of lying in a gutter and not knowing your own name.
Finally, unless you’re playing sport or you’re a Michael Jackson impersonator, you have NO reason to wear white socks, especially when wearing a suit. Go for black, unless you want to make a huge statement with a crazy, out-there colour like navy or dark brown.
Follow these simple guidelines religiously and you will be rewarded with compliments rather than ridicule!
